There are only few IPS monitors in the market which are available at affordable price with wide range of features. HP VH240a is among those precious gems. It offers great thin bezel design, nice performance and cool specifications without becoming a burden on your pocket. You are also getting it from a brand which is know for producing top quality computers and its components.
It is a perfect offering for people who are on a budget and want something which fulfill their requirements perfectly. There is no point in spending large amount of money on a monitor which doesn’t give you best return on investment. You should firstly check your needs and then you can buy a monitor which is suitable for you. VH240a is a nice choice for a person who wants to use it for everyday tasks like web browsing, document editing and casual gamers but it is not an ideal pick for graphic designers, video editors and professional gamers.
Now that we have cleared everything on its target market, let’s review HP VH240a and see what are the advantages and disadvantages of getting this product.
Table of Contents
Design
This 24 inch model provides 23.8 inch viewable diagonal screen size. Special attention is given to its design with edgeless borders on three sides of the screen. In our opinion, it is more better looking than HP 24ea which is stunning in its own right. Its bezel-less outlook is very pleasing to the eyes and it works like a charm in multimonitor setup. You get UltraWide viewing experience because of its slim bezels. The monitor weight is minimal, therefore, changing its position on your table and within your home or office wouldn’t take much effort. Overall, it is manufactured intelligently by taking into account even the miniature of details.
One of the most appealing aspect of this monitor is its ergonomic stand. It is capable of wide array of functionalities like tilt, swivel, height and pivot adjustment. Its tilt range is -5° to +30° which is above average range than most of the other monitors. You can also swivel it up to 360° and rotate the display up to 90°. Its height is adjustable and you can also remove the stand when required. It is VESA mount compatible so mounting it will not be a problem.
Display
HP VH240a is full HD 1920×1080 resolution monitor with high quality IPS panel. The In-Plane Switching technology produces accurate and vibrant colors from almost every viewing angle. The use of this display ensures that color and contrast of text and images on the screen remain consistent even from extreme 178° horizontal or vertical viewing angle. We have to give credit to the company for choosing IPS over VA or TN. They could have easily opted for cheaper panel at this price point but they gave priority to the best technology for this monitor.
This monitor provides 72% sRGB color gamut coverage out of total 100%. This is not a good news for professional graphic designers because they usually look for monitors which provide 99% or 100% sRGB coverage. This just shows that if your job is related to this field, then this product is not for you. Apart from that, it has usual 16:9 aspect ratio along with 10M:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 2 million pixels so that you get crisp and attractive images. Maximum brightness level is 250 nits which is decent enough for this display size. VH240a screen comes with anti-glare coating which is ideal for people who are going to place this monitor in a bright or sunlit environment as it will help in eliminating the reflection of that light.
Performance
We mentioned before that its screen covers 72% sRGB color gamut so it is going to be an issue for design heavy users. Everyday Joe might not notice it but if you are a designer, you would definitely note that some fine details are missing in images. If you are not one of them, then there isn’t much to worry about because its IPS panel does a decent job to provide beautiful colors.
This monitor has 2x2W built-in speakers. They are not good at all with very low bass. You should not buy it if you want to save some space on the work desk. If you have extra space on the desk, you should rather invest in some high quality external speakers.
Four OSD buttons are present under the screen and they can be accessed with ease. Connectivity options are limited with HDMI and VGA ports. HDCP support is also present but there is no headphone jack. It offers response time of 5ms and refresh rate of 60Hz which is nice for casual gaming but not enough for professional gamers. It is not a beast in terms of performance and you can’t expect it to be because HP VH240a is a budget offering. Rest assured, it is a very good choice for general use and office work.

Pros and Cons
- Beautiful bezel-less design which is perfect for multimonitor setup.
- Solid stand with tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment option.
- Excellent price given the amount of feature you are getting.
- 72% sRGB coverage is not an appealing spec for designers.
- Speakers are below average.
Conclusion
HP VH240a is an excellent pick for people who are going to use it for causal and office work. It is a bargain even for people who like to play games from time to time but it can’t be a go to monitor for professional gamers. Response time and refresh rate is not good enough for that purpose. Similarly, this monitor is not useful for design heavy users because sRGB is not around 90%-100% mark which is minimal requirement for this working class. If you don’t belong to these two mentioned categories, we highly recommend you to buy this monitor as HP VH240a will definitely give you best bang for the bucks.
